Controls Technician

As a controls technician, you will provide analytical assistance and technical expertise in the installation, programming, troubleshooting and preventative maintenance of electrical and control systems installed on vessels to control their propulsion systems. In this role you will also provide technical assistance and carry out mechanical repairs to propulsion systems internationally.


  • Attend vessels on an international basis to investigate, rectify & offer recommendations for faults on control and electrical systems with OEM recognised control equipment
  • Ability to analyse data from the control equipment and details issued from the actual vessel with a view to identifying the problem and then progressing a solution. Recording, analysing and interpreting test data
  • Onsite commissioning of control systems
  • Installation of controls systems on Vessels and onshore side machinery
  • Product Improvement identification
  • Servicing & maintaining control and electrical equipment along
  • Preparing documentations and writing report visits. Reporting back to Service Dpt
  • Producing Risk Assessments & Method Statements
  • Proposing modifications
  • Carry out annual/interval surveys on control equipment by customer base for maintenance and pre-emptive work
  • Review controls deliverables & initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Ability to ‘think of the bigger picture’ and take into account long term implications of actions within an attendance
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines within teams & projects
  • Ensure all work activities are in accordance with procedures to cover Quality processes and Health & Safety legislation in accordance with our current QMS system


  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong electrical background
  • Working knowledge of PLC’s – set up & configuration
  • Good knowledge of frequency drives/soft starts/autotransformers
  • Good knowledge of control systems/functionality of follow up control systems
  • Understanding of DP systems, joystick Systems, AutoPilot systems & interfaces
  • Knowledge of hydraulic & pneumatic systems
  • Ability to read electrical drawings & identify components within drawings
  • Good interpersonal skills, time management & attention to detail
  • Ability to present a professional image whilst retaining a sense of calm & efficiency
  • A positive attitude is essential in order to create a positive culture

Due to the nature of the role, there will be a relative amount of additional requirements to work out with normal working hours, in order that a professional and timely service is provided. Any paid overtime requires authorisation by the Operations Manager if not attributed to a specific contract prior to the overtime being carried out.
