This month our service activity ranged from propeller repairs in our African workshops to service attendances in the UK, Romania and Mexico. From our strategically located service hubs, we’ve been providing ship owners and vessel management companies with service and parts solutions at a moments notice.
5-Year Maintenance Attendance
First up this month, our service team were on hand to attend a vessel for its 5-year maintenance repairs at Lowestoft drydock. The job scope included a seal change and propeller repair on a SCHOTTEL SRP 1010 unit. In order to complete the propeller polishing, we partnered with our sister company Stone Marine Shipcare. This resulted in minimum downtime in drydock for the vessel owner.
African Propeller and Thruster Repair
SMS are specialists in the repair and servicing of all propeller types and on this occasion, our African engineers travelled to Sturrock dry dock in Cape Town to polish and repair propeller blades and a thruster in situ.
Upon arrival, we carried out an inspection of the propellers to find that all four blades were still in specification. Our engineers then rough polished and cleaned the propellers to ISO 484 standards.
Heavily Damaged Propeller Blade Repair
Regardless of the job scope, our propeller technicians have the skills to meet your operational needs. On this job, our team were tasked with the repair of four damaged propellers.
Therefore, at our workshop in Cape Town, we completed an inspection before getting to work on the repair, which consisted of welding the broken blades and concluded by polishing and balancing all four propellers blades. Our African team are experts in the repair and servicing of all propeller types, either FPP or CPP.
Thruster Removal in Lisbon
Back in Europe, our engineers were called out to investigate a gearbox failure in Lisbon, Portugal. The investigation was undertaken at the yard nearby where our engineer recommended that the complete unit should be stripped down for dis-assembly. The SCHOTTEL SRP 1010FP steering gear unit was then removed and manoeuvred from the vessel to dockside.
