As we come to the end of another year, we look back at the highlights from what has been an eventful year for the SMS team. From employee milestones and new business partnerships to service attendances all over the world during a pandemic, it’s been a year like no other.
January | Key Appointment
We started the year with a key appointment by promoting Ryan McIntyre to the position of Sales Director. The move to strengthen our senior management team proved beneficial as we continued to grow our team and partnerships throughout the year.
February | Partnership with Subsea Global Solutions
Following a successful period of working together on shared projects, we announced a cooperation agreement that allowed us to collaborate more closely on the service and repair of critical marine assets. This development delivered real benefit to customers looking to improve their service and cost management to repair and service their critical assets.

March | American road trip
Before the world went into lockdown, our sales team toured America visiting our partners, suppliers and customers. During a busy ten-day trip, we had the opportunity to meet with TMOT and SGS before heading to Houma to visit SCHOTTEL’s impressive facility.
Below are some images from the trip:
April | Project Curacao
During the early stages of the pandemic, our engineers travelled to the Caribbean. In partnership with Subsea Global Solutions, we underwent an extensive overhaul programme, including the underwater removal, servicing, re-installation and commissioning of 6 thruster units.

June | SMS partnered with Damen Marine Components
The agreement allowed us to provide service support in the UK, Ireland and African markets, supporting existing and prospective customers.
With over 150 years of experience, DMC has established a reputation for producing products that are advanced, high-quality and reliable and we were delighted to reach an agreement with a brand that is synonymous with innovation in a global market.

July | COVID Service Excellence
We went the extra mile to complete this service job during a period of difficulty for our customer. The job required our team to attend a vessel south of the border to remove the upper gearbox and bring it directly back to our workshop in Scotland to be overhauled. Upon completion, we shipped the unit back to the vessel to be fitted and carried out sea trials.
August | We expanded our reach in Africa.
We have enjoyed a connection with Africa that spans more than a decade, from our extensive service centre in Namibia to its smaller cousin in Cape Town. As part of our strategy to extend our services to customers in West Africa, we were delighted to announce a cooperation with Nigerdock.

September | Freight Ferry Annual Service
Our team of engineers were in Falmouth to carry out essential annual service and repairs to this freight ferry, which lasted approximately five weeks. We overhauled the stern seals, bow thrusters, OD box, steering gear and replaced the propeller blades during this time.

October | Seals Bonding Afloat
Situated in the Aegean Sea, our experienced stern seals engineer was presented with the challenging task of bonding whilst the vessel was still afloat. To carry out the repair, we trimmed the tanker to ensure that the propeller and seal were safely above the water to repair afloat whilst the ship is resided alongside.
November | Pump Jets
Our team in the workshop was kept busy with several overhauls throughout the year, which was no different this month. In this case, our engineers overhauled two SCHOTTEL SPJ Pump Jets.
